Fifth Annual Summer Research Summit: Academic-Community Partnerships: Change Agents for Advancing Health

Baylor College of Medicine’s Center of Excellence in Health Equity, Research and Training (Baylor COE) is soliciting conference session proposals for the Center’s Fourth Annual Summer Research Summit, on Tuesday, May 17, 2022, with a Student/Trainee Pre-Conference on the day prior (May 16). The plenary and concurrent sessions connected are generally connected with the annual theme and overall learning objectives for the conference (see below). The theme for this year’s summit is Academic-Community Partnerships: Change Agents for Advancing Health Equity.
Proposals should be thought-provoking, and accessible to a broad technical and lay audience. We are particularly interested in proposals that address one of the following areas:
- Developing and Sustaining Health Equity Oriented Academic-Community Partnerships
- Academic-Community Partner-Based Participatory Health Equity Research
- Health Equity Public Policy Change and Advocacy through Academic-Community Partnerships
- Academic-Community Partnerships to Improve Health Professions Education Curriculum
- Effective Assessment in Health Equity Oriented Academic-Community Partnerships
The plenary and concurrent sessions are one-hour in length, and generally include 10-15 minutes for Q&A. Presentations are recorded and archived for future educational use by the Baylor COE. Presenters do not have to be affiliated with Baylor College of Medicine. We welcome submissions from all disciplines and levels including faculty, staff and trainees at academic medical centers and other higher education institutions, private-practice healthcare professionals, government agencies, community organizations, health care organizations, and research institutions.
Conference Learning Objectives and Target Audience
The summit will help participants explore current topics in health equity research, education, clinical care, and outreach and offer an opportunity for connecting with allies and partners working the field of health equity and reducing health disparities. At the conclusion of this course, the participants should be able to:
- Summarize the effects of socioeconomic factors, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation and other patient characteristics on health inequities and identify ways to mitigate them in your own practice or organization
- Apply course learnings to create a more welcoming healthcare environment and improve the delivery of culturally appropriate care for increasingly diverse patient populations
- Mobilize clinicians, researchers, trainees, and other allies to engage in policy, systems and environmental change activities in support of health equity
- Leverage partnerships and cross sector collaborations to advance health equity and identify best practices, methods and strategies to increase health equity in local communities
- Summarize policies and practices that have been shown to contribute to inclusive workplace environments, and enhance recruitment, advancement and retention underrepresented minorities in the healthcare workforce
- Develop and empower faculty, staff and trainees to support personal and organizational strategic goals related to diversity, inclusion and health equity
The Summit is open to all interested physicians and other healthcare professionals, healthcare administrators, trainees (e.g., residents, clinical fellows, and postdoctoral scholars), biomedical scientists, students (including undergraduates and high school), public health and other government officials, community organizations, and community members nationwide who are committed to workforce diversity in the health and biomedical sciences and bringing quality healthcare to underserved and under-represented populations in the United States.
General Requirements for Proposals
- All plenary sessions and concurrent sessions at the conference are for 60 minutes in length inclusive of audience Q&A. Pay attention to your proposal submission to ensure that it can be delivered in that timeframe using a virtual conference platform.
- All sessions are limited to one primary presenter and no more than four secondary presenters. Baylor COE will officially correspond with only the primary presenter. It is the primary presenter's responsibility to communicate all conference information in a timely manner to any and all secondary presenters.
- Be sure that your session title clearly describes exactly what the session is about. Baylor COE reserves the right to edit session titles.
- Avoid abbreviations and acronyms that don't clearly explain the session's content.
- Use active verbs to describe exactly what will occur in the session. Examples include words such as describe, discuss, role-play, and present.
- Describe specific presentation techniques that you will be using, such as interactive, lecture, panel, or multimedia, so that participants will know what kind of session they will be attending. (NOTE: Please make sure to take into account that this year’s conference will be delivered using a virtual conference platform.)
- Indicate whether handouts will be available. Describe what you will be doing in the session and what the participants can expect to leave with.
- Write in complete sentences. Do not use phrases. Pay attention to grammar and spelling.
- Follow the description character limits. Baylor COE reserves the right to edit session descriptions.
- You may submit more than one proposal, but you must submit an individual submission form for each contribution. Each submission will be reviewed independently.
- Please complete all the fields listed (if information is unknown, note that). Only complete submissions will be considered by the planning committee.

All proposals for sessions submitted for the COE Summer Research Summit will be peer reviewed and rated by the members of the Conference Planning Committee. Questions reviewers will consider when evaluating proposals include:
- How well does the proposal relate to the conference theme and learning objectives as well as the Baylor COE mission and aims?
- Is proposal content of current interest or a hot topic?
- Does the proposal represent an innovation, new research, or promising practices?
- Does the proposal address or support addressing barriers towards improving workforce diversity in health care professions and/or effective and innovative approaches to reduce or eliminate health disparities?
- Is the outcome or takeaway clearly defined so that the audience clearly knows what they will be leaving with?
- Is the proposal clearly written? Does the proposal provide a clear and concise overview of the content and activities?

Individuals whose session proposals are accepted are eligible for a discounted registration rate $25.
