The Diversity Admissions Symposium provides assistance to accomplished undergraduate and post-baccalaureate students who have traditionally been underrepresented in medicine and biomedical sciences workforce and are interested in applying to medical, graduate health professions or graduate biomedical sciences schools. In addition, selected attendees will be given an opportunity to participate in a mock interview with faculty and staff experienced with the admissions process.

About the Symposium

This free* event is a collaboration between the Office of Community Engagement & Health Equity and leaders from the Student National Medical Association, Latino Medical Student Association, American Medical Women's Association, BCM Pride, BCM Spectrum, Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) at BCM and Association of Graduate Student Diversity.

* The only expense attendees will need to cover is the TMC parking garage daily rate.

Purpose and Format

The purpose of the event is to introduce students underrepresented in medicine and science, first-generation, non-traditional, economically and environmentally disadvantaged and sexual orientation and gender or other historically marginalized backgrounds and persons with a disability, to Baylor College of Medicine as well as support and encourage these students to pursue a medical, health professions or biomedical sciences careers.

The event will be held virtually using Microsoft Teams and include closed captioning support for attendees. The event includes panel discussions; speakers on admissions pathways and diversity topics, and skill development breakout sessions covering:

  • Becoming a Competitive Applicant
  • Non-Traditional Pathways: Reapplicant, Gap Years Experiences, Career Changers, etc.
  • Improving your CV/Resume for the Admissions Process
  • Developing a Successful Application Portfolio
  • Student-Program Fit: What to Look for in a Graduate / Health Professions School
  • Imposter Phenomena & Confronting Fear and Failure 
  • Powerful Personal Statement
  • Conversation about Women, BIPOC and Persons with Disabilities in the Health Professions and Biomedical Sciences
  • Making the Most of Your Interview Visit
  • Finding Shadowing and Research Experiences as a Underrepresented Minority Applicant
  • Preparing for Graduate / Medical School as a First-Generation College Student
  • Maintaining Your Wellness as an Applicant and Future Graduate / Medical Student 

In addition, selected attendees applying for the upcoming admissions cycle will be given priority for an opportunity to participate in a mock interview with faculty and staff experienced with medical school, graduate school of biomedical sciences, and school of health professions admissions. Slots will be based upon availability of faculty and staff interviewers.
