Job Shadow Program

Job Shadow Program - Summer 2018

Baylor College of Medicine’s Career Development Center will sponsor the Job Shadow Program with the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences by offering forty students the opportunity to individually “job shadow” an employer for one full business day between Monday, Aug. 6 and Friday, Sept. 14, 2018.

Job shadowing provides a unique experiential opportunity to observe work environments firsthand and interact with various professionals to learn more about specific career paths. Through the Job Shadow Program students will obtain information and develop an enhanced awareness of the skills and specific competencies necessary to succeed in diverse careers in science.

Why participate?
- Gain an insider’s perspective by observing the day-to-day operations of an organization
- Generate professional connections that you may not otherwise have secured during graduate training
- Obtain career insights and information that can positively impact your future job search

Feedback from prior Baylor College of Medicine student participants:

"I loved having the hands-on experience of getting a full day at a biotech company. The company was extremely friendly and welcoming, and I got to spend one-on-one time with people at every level of the company from the CEO to CSO to the scientific team."

"I enjoyed the opportunity to not only speak with people in this position, and to hear about why they enjoy working there, but also the opportunity to sit in on various meetings and gain real insight into the day-to-day activities."

"As a result of my shadowing experience, I am becoming more comfortable with the various jobs in the industry and the roles that new Ph.D.s may be qualified for in each of these areas. I believe this better enables me to search for jobs in the future, as well as hone my professional development and training during my remaining time in graduate school."

To apply:
- Complete the online application to indicate your career path preference.
- Participation is on a first come-first serve basis with a maximum of 50 student slots allocated
- Selected students will be matched with only one company

Site selection and participation agreement:
In the application process, you will have the opportunity to select your top three career path choices (in ranking order). The Career Development Center will make every effort to secure your first option. In order to participate, you must also receive signed consent from your graduate advisor prior to your shadow day.

Expectations for students:
- Job shadowing is observation only. This is not an internship and you will not be required to perform work at the employer site. However, you will be expected to exhibit professionalism throughout your shadow day.
- Following the shadow day you will be required to complete a short evaluation and provide a brief testimonial of your experience.
- Transportation to and from the employer site is the sole responsibility of the student.

Why host a student?
- Establish recruiting ties with Baylor College of Medicine
- Provide visibility to your organization
- Help determine the viability for future internship programs
- Provide informal mentoring guidance to students interested in working for your organization or within your respective sector

Suggested activities to include in a job shadowing day:
- Introduction to your organization
- Introductions to the organization's various business units
- Discussion of current projects and major initiatives
- Tour of the workspace
- Discussion of employee roles and necessary skills
- Meet with HR to discuss the hiring process and provide general advice that may aid in the student’s future job search
