Professional Statement
Role of Viruses in Neoplasia
Herpesviruses. The association of herpes simplex virus (HSV) types 1 and 2 with female genital neoplasia has been studied for many years, and a serum and tissue bank has been established in the laboratory. Well-documented samples provide a means to study new methods for the detection of virus-associated antigens and antibodies in clinical specimens. Human papillomaviruses (HPV) have been directly implicated as potential causative agents for carcinoma of the lower genital tract of women. The presence of HPV and HSV genomes and of viral specific antigens is being traced in neoplastic tissue specimens.
