Professional Statement
I first became enticed by genetics while in high school after reading The Forever Fix by Ricki Lewis. Since then, the complexities and challenges of genetics have led me to pursuing a career as a Genetic Counselor. After graduating from the University of Alabama with a bachelor’s degree in Biology, I was fortunate to complete a Genetic Counseling Internship at Northwestern University and later become a Laboratory Genetic Counselor Assistant at PreventionGenetics. These opportunities allowed me to gain a more complete understanding of the field and helped me grow professionally. In addition I have been a coach for Special Olympics, a student ambassador for the Multiple Sulfatase Deficiency Foundation, a SANE advocate, and a bereavement and hospice volunteer. These experiences demonstrated to me the importance of empowering others, serving as an advocate, and the need for equitable healthcare. In my free time I enjoy being outside in any capacity, cooking, gardening and trying as many restaurants as humanly possible. I am incredibly grateful to be attending the Baylor College of Medicine Genetic Counseling Training Program where I can continue to study genetics and grow as a healthcare provider. I am happy to talk with prospective students about moving to Houston, the program, and any application questions in general.
