April 1, 2021 - Dr. Farrah Kheradmand, professor, Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, has been awarded the American Thoracic Society 2021 Recognition Award for Scientific Accomplishments.

April 1, 2021 - Dr. Kanta Velamuri has received the 2021 Barbara and Corbin J. Robertson, Jr. Presidential Award for Excellence in Education.

March 23, 2021 - Dr. Fidaa Shaib, associate professor, Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, was interviewed for a March 23 newscast on KTRK ABC 13 titled “COVID long haulers.” She also was interviewed for a March 29 article on click2houston.com titled “Baylor opens clinic to treat COVID-19 ‘long-haulers’ in Houston” as well as a March 24 newscast on KRIV Fox 26 titled “Baylor College of Medicine opens clinic for COVID long haulers.”

Feb. 26, 2021 - Dr. Ivan Rosas, professor and chief, Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, was interviewed for a Feb. 26 article on CNN titled “Arthritis drugs can help critically ill COVID-19 patients, study suggests.”

Feb. 12, 2021 - Dr. Pat Herlihy, professor, Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, was interviewed for a Feb. 12 newscast on KRIV Fox 26 titled “Houston doctor on CDC warning to avoid air travel.”

Feb. 9, 2021 - Dr. Fidaa Shaib, associate professor, Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, was interviewed for a Feb. 9 article in BCM News titled “What are the long-term side effects of COVID-19?”

Feb. 1, 2021 - The 2021 Star Awards for Excellence in Patient Care have been released. This award recognizes mid-career faculty who exhibit excellence and outstanding contributions in patient care. This year’s DoM recipients include Dr. Kanta Velamuri, Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine

Feb. 1, 2021 – Dr. Rolando Rumbaut received the Senior Clinician Scientist Investigator Award from the National VA Biomedical Laboratory Research and Development Service. 

Jan. 27, 2021 - Dr. Nicola Hanania, associate professor, Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, gave two invited lectures at the NAPCON Virtual Conference, held Jan. 27-31. His titles were “How Asthma Biomarkers Direct Therapy” and “Esosinophilic COPD: A Real Entity?”

Jan. 27, 2021 - Drs. Kalpalatha Guntupalli, professor, Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, and Dharani Narendra, assistant professor, Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, presented at the NAPCON Virtual Conference, held Jan. 27-31. Dr. Guntupalli’s presentation was titled “Is COVID Respiratory Failure Different? Management of COVID ARDS” and Dr. Narendra’s presentation was titled “Asthma COPD Overlap.”

Jan. 1, 2021 - Dr. Fidaa Shaib, associate professor, Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, has been elected to one of the four Board of Governors At-Large Member positions.

Oct. 1, 2020 - Programs across the state of Texas competed against one another in the Society of Critical Care Medicine Texas Chapter 2020 symposium's inaugural Jeopardy competition. Drs. Ahmed Salem and Orlando Garner, BCM critical care fellows, under the leadership of Dr. Dharani Narendra, assistant professor, Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, represented BCM and shared the first place win with San Antonio.

Aug. 25, 2020 - Dr. Orlando Garner, PGY5 fellow, Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, wrote an Aug. 25 article in BCM Blogs titled “Resilience through COVID-19: Surviving the virus.”

Aug. 19, 2020 - Dr. Ritwick Agrawal, assistant professor, Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, was invited by the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) to participate in an ACCP CHEST wellness webinar on Aug. 19. The topic was “Strategies to Combat Stress and Fatigue.”

Aug. 14, 2020 - Dr. Philip Alapat, assistant professor, Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, was interviewed for an Aug. 14 article in the Houston Chronicle titled “Set healthy sleep habits for the new school year.” He also was interviewed for an Aug. 14 article in BCM News, also titled “Set healthy sleep habits for the new school year.”

Aug. 13, 2020 - Dr. Kalpalatha Guntupalli, professor, Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, was invited to present "COVID-19, concepts and controversies" at the scientific rounds of the FDA on Thursday, Aug. 13th.

Aug. 5, 2020 - Dr. Kalpalatha Guntupalli, professor, Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, was interviewed for an Aug. 5 article in Houston Style Magazine titled “COVID-19 patients get lifesaving moves from prone teams at Ben Taub, LBJ hospitals.”

Aug. 4, 2020 - Dr. Nicola Hanania, associate professor, Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, was interviewed for an Aug. 4 article in Defender titled “Harris Health System’s COVID-19 research contributes to worldwide advances.”

Aug. 1, 2020 - Dr. Jairo Barrantes Perez of Baylor St. Luke’s shared his experience working on the front lines of the pandemic with the New York Times. 

Aug. 1, 2020 - Dr. Fidaa Shaib, associate professor, Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, has been selected to serve a two-year term as a Faculty Senate designated member of the Inclusion and Excellence Council.

Aug. 1, 2020 - Dr. Lindsay Celada, assistant professor, Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, has been offered a position by the National Institutes of Health in the Rare Diseases Scholars program to enhance and support her career in rare disease research. The position includes attending monthly seminars, giving presentations, a writing workshop, and a capstone research project presentation at their semi-annual meeting

Aug. 1, 2020 – Dr. Lavannya Pandit received a $34,543 grant from the Department of Veterans Affairs for a project titled “G6PD Deficiency Predicts Outcomes from COVID-19 Infection Amongst Veterans at Highest Risk for Severity of Illness

Aug. 1, 2020 - Dr. Christopher Howard, assistant professor, Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, presented the rollout of a new BSLMC initiative regarding helmet-based noninvasive ventilation to more than 150 national clinical leaders of the CommonSpirit hospital system.

July 30, 2020 - Dr. Ahmed Salem, PGY6 fellow, Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine,  was interviewed for a July 30 article in Click 2 Houston titled “Delirium added to list of complications in COVID-19 patients.”

July 29, 2020 - Dr. Nicola Hanania, associate professor, Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, was an invited virtual lecturer for the following: Grand Rounds, “Real World Strategies to Improve Asthma Management,” Mercer University School of Medicine; Educator Course, American Lung Association, “Confronting COPD in 2020”
