Intrauterine insemination, or IUI, involves collection of the male's ejaculate and its subsequent processing or "washing." The ejaculate is then inserted into the female's cervix or uterus with a special injection catheter. This generally is considered to be the least invasive of the assisted reproductive techniques, but its effectiveness is limited when patients have severe fertility problems.
