Richard Appel performed research with Dr. LeMaire and Dr. Shen in their Aortic Disease Research Lab at Baylor College of Medicine from 2015 to 2020, while earning his degree in Biochemistry and Cell Biology at Rice University. Rice University has awarded Richard the 2020 George J. Schoroepfer, Jr. Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Research in Biochemistry, and the Distinction in Research and Creative Work Award, for his research on the role of the NLRP3 inflammasome pathway in aortic aneurysms and dissections.

Richard has been accepted by Baylor College of Medicine as a medical student starting in the fall of 2020. He thanks and acknowledges his mentors at Baylor College of Medicine, Dr. Scott LeMaire, Dr. Ying Shen, and Dr. Pingping Ren, “They taught me everything that I know about research, and I am incredibly thankful for their support.”
