Professional Statement
I graduated in 1992 from the Department of Chemistry at Shandong University that my great grandfather (Professor Tian of Mathematics) had helped to lay the cornerstone more than 100 years ago. After obtaining my PhD from Georgia State University in 2004, my research focus horizons extended from not only carbohydrate and small heterocycle synthesis, but also to oligomer and polymer synthesis as well as nanomaterial fabrication and modification.I came to Texas to appreciate the grandeurs of Big Bend, Mt. Guadalupe and Rio Grande, a la misma hora Fate and serendipity had also shown me the beauties and great potentials hiding in the interdisciplinary areas of chemistry-polymer-nano-bioscence-omics and much more. My current interests lie primarily in the area of small/polymer synthesis, their biological properties, and more importantly to elucidate the mechanism through which incorporated biomolecules interact in a molecular biological level. In order to fulfill the goal, I have to collaborate with researchers from many disciplines including biochemistry, biophysics, physics, mathematics, structural biology, and medicine. Hopefully, our research will eventually make it easier to understand and provide gene therapies for various cancers, fibrosis and inheritable diseases.
I also want to share with you my motto “Was mich nicht umbringt macht mich starker” (Friedrich Nietzsche).
