Estela E. Medrano Award for Excellence in Research on Aging
This award was established in May 2011 to honor Dr. Estela Medrano’s remarkable legacy as an accomplished scientist and a devoted mentor. Dr. Medrano, a beloved faculty member in the Huffington Center on Aging at Baylor College of Medicine, was a national leader in the study of epigenetic mechanisms and signaling pathways that regulate aging, cellular senescence, and melanoma development. She was also a passionate educator and was the principal investigator of a longstanding Biology of Aging training grant. Dr. Medrano was tragically killed in an automobile accident in August 2010. A quasi-endowment was created with various gifts made in her memory that now fund the Estela E. Medrano Award for Excellence in Research on Aging. This award is presented annually to a graduate student or a postdoctoral associate in the field of aging and age-related disease research, who are the first prize winners of the Roy M. Huffington Distinguished Lecture Poster Session.
