Pathology-Anatomic and Clinical Residency Admissions and Benefits

The Department of Pathology & Immunology at Baylor College of Medicine provides a four-year, fully accredited residency program with approximately six to eight PGY-1 level positions available each year. There are a total of 31 accredited residency positions. Our first-year positions are filled exclusively through the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP). Trainees typically pursue a course leading to certification in both anatomical and clinical pathology.

Applications to the Pathology Residency Program at Baylor College of Medicine are processed through the Electronic Residency Application Service from the Association of American Medical Colleges. No universal or other applications are accepted.

Graduates of U.S. medical schools will need to contact their current Student Affairs Office to apply through the ERAS program.

The following documentation is required:

• Three letters of recommendation from faculty members
• Personal statement
• Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE)
• USMLE/COMLEX results
• Medical school transcript
• ECFMG status report (if foreign medical graduate)
• A completed application with a recent passport-size photograph

To allow adequate time for review and processing, all applications and supporting materials must be received through ERAS by the Pathology Education Office on or before Dec. 31.

The selection of applicants is made on the basis of information contained in the application form, medical school transcript, medical school dean's letter, and letters of recommendation, which are received from the ERAS program. The selected applicants are invited to interview with faculty members and current residents.

After the interview process is complete, the Pathology Education Committee members review and rank all of the applicants. Final ranking is determined with consultation from both the department chair and program director.

The pathology department provides a yearly book stipend, which can be utilized to purchase conventional or electronic books. Additionally, our residents have the opportunity to attend local, in-state and national conferences.

International graduates must meet the requirements established by the Graduate Medical Education Office at Baylor College of Medicine, as set by the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners and Immigration Services. For more information, please review the International Services Office page.

International graduates will also need to contact the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates for information regarding the paperwork process for students and graduates of foreign medical schools. Baylor College of Medicine requires international medical graduates to meet the terms for an Institutional Permit, as outlined by the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners and have the documents necessary for a J-1 Visa.
