Understanding the Psychosocial Needs of Individuals with Osteogenesis Imperfecta Across the Lifespan (Brittle Bone)

In partnership with the Osteogenesis Imperfecta Foundation and Brittle Bone Disorders Consortium, this study sought to better understand the mental health and pain experiences of the individuals with Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI). Through interviews with adult and pediatric patients with OI, caregivers of individuals with OI, and clinicians who serve patients with OI, the study team hopes to broadly scope the unmet mental health and pain needs of the OI community.

Parent-Led CBT for Youth with ASD and Co-Occurring Anxiety (StepASD)

In collaboration with Texas Children’s Autism Center, Baylor College of Medicine researched a parent-led cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) for youth with anxiety and ASD. Treatment focused on teaching parents and children how to gradually face fear and coping skills for dealing with different problems. The project’s goal was to provide children and parents with the necessary tools to appropriately cope with stressful and anxiety provoking situations.

Treatment Preference for Children with ASD and Anxiety

For this study, we were interested in hearing from parents of children with ASD and anxiety regarding their thoughts and feelings towards various treatments. Through use of an online survey, we sought to learn more about the types of treatments parents prefer for their child, with the aim of using this information to educate future providers and facilitate provider-parent decision-making about treatment.

Coping with COVID-19 (Project Reach 2.0)

Researchers at Baylor College of Medicine developed a project that provided free coping support and brief parent-led cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) interventions for children and adolescents in Houston, Texas who were experiencing stress or anxiety due to the COVID-19 crisis.

COVID-19 and Anxiety

The Menninger Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences at Baylor College of Medicine is investigated clinicians’ perceptions on how the current COVID-19 pandemic is impacting existing patients with anxiety.

TeleASD

TeleASD was a treatment study that provided free parent-led cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for children aged 7-13 in Texas who have Autism Spectrum Disorder and anxiety symptoms (fears and worries). Therapy was delivered through Zoom over the course of 12 weeks. CBT is an evidenced-based therapy that is one of the best treatments for stress and anxiety in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. In parent-led therapy, parents learn skills to cope with stress and anxiety that they can teach to their child. The child does not need to talk to the therapist directly. In this program, participants worked with their child to help them complete activities and worksheets that allow them to gradually face feared situations and teach them how to adjust their thinking to reduce their anxiety.

Genetic Risk Factors and Reproductive Decision-Making in Individuals with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

This project examined the knowledge and attitudes towards genetic testing in individuals with OCD and how it informs their reproductive decision-making. It involved a brief, online, anonymous self-report questionnaire.
