September Lecture

Investigating the Prevalence of Soil Transmitted Helminth and Parasitic Infection in a Pediatric Cohort from Malawi
Date: Sept. 10, 2024
Time: 10 - 11 a.m. CST
Virtual (Link will be sent after registration)
Parasitic infections can cause systemic health problems such as nutritional deficiencies, cognitive impairment, and increased susceptibility to secondary infections. Importantly, infection with soil-transmitted helminths (STH) and schistosomes skews the immune profile towards Th2 innate and adaptive immune responses. Dr. Sarah Gunter and her team believe that the skewed immune response due to parasitic infection is a driving factor in the development of other diseases, such as acute rheumatic fever (ARF) and rheumatic heart disease (RHD), which are often endemic in the same populations.
In this lecture, Dr. Sarah Gunter will discuss their current study, which investigates the prevalence of STH and schistosomiasis and their association with RHD in a pediatric cohort from Malawi.
Biography: Sarah Gunter is an assistant professor in the Department of Pediatric Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children’s Hospital. She serves as the Director of the Laboratory of Infectious Disease Epidemiology in her division. Her laboratory specifically focuses on developing geospatial and molecular tools to better combat some of the world’s most deadly vector-borne and neglected tropical diseases.
