Baylor offers 4 spots (of 12 total residency class spots) for Early Specialization in Interventional Radiology (ESIR) pathway. The curriculum consists of 12 months of interventional radiology rotations over three years at a variety of institutions, which are highly beneficial in providing a wide variety of experience to residents. A one-month surgical ICU rotation is also included and occurs at Ben Taub Hospital. The strong procedural and clinical experience will open doors to trainees for their final year of training. Hospitals for IR rotations include:

Ben Taub Hospital is one of two Level 1 Trauma Centers in the Houston area, providing great experience with high acuity cases. The high-volume case load also includes great variety: neuro-interventions (including a stroke center), interventional oncology, peripheral vascular, renal/biliary interventions, and an outpatient IR clinic.

The VA Medical Center serves as a tertiary referral center for regional VA hospitals. Its unique patient population and transplant center status provide a variety of high-level cases, including transplant interventions, interventional oncology, and dialysis access interventions. The department performs over 2500-3000 annual cases.

Texas Children’s Hospital is a high-volume center with plenty of clinical and research opportunities. It provides a full spectrum of pediatric procedures ranging from interventional oncology to the treatment of vascular anomalies.

MD Anderson Cancer Center is a robust clinical service which provides a strong and unique experience with interventional oncology procedures, including ablations and experimental cancer-related treatment administration. The IR team at MD Anderson are the leaders of the pulmonary embolism response team, and perform a high volume of peripheral and central thrombectomies and stenting. MDACC also provides ample opportunities for research with leaders in the field.
