We feel that we have a broad range of relevant educational activities to help guide our fellows on a path of life-long learning and independent practice. Fellows are provided protected time in order to participate in all of the following activities.
Here are descriptions for the main educational activities offered to our fellows during the year:
Pediatric Anesthesiology Fellows & Faculty Conference – A weekly CME accredited series which consists of a variety of activities including presentations, problem-based learning, and journal clubs which are facilitated by fellows, faculty, and guest speakers on a wide range of topics.
Pediatric Anesthesia Comprehensive Review Series – A weekly series held on Tuesday evenings, typically held at a local restaurant. The series is devoted to preparation for the American Board of Anesthesiology, Pediatric Anesthesiology Board Examination using the examination content outline as a guide.
Departmental Journal Club – Fellows gather periodically to critically evaluate recent peer-reviewed articles in pediatric anesthesiology. The discussion focuses on research methodologies, study strengths and weaknesses. These occur throughout the academic year and is led by faculty experts in pediatric anesthesiology research.
Pediatric Cardiovascular Anesthesia Conference – A weekly session which is designed to cover a broad range of pediatric cardiovascular anesthesiology topics facilitated by faculty and guest speakers.
Keats’ Corner Lecture Series – Pediatric cardiovascular anesthesiology focused case-based discussions that occur 2 – 3 times a month.
Texas Children’s Hospital, Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative, and Pain Medicine, Grand Rounds - A quarterly session devoted to having an invited, national expert present a clinical or professional issue topic of interest to our fellows and faculty.
Preparation for the ABA Standardized Oral Examination – This session occurs weekly, typically January through May, with faculty volunteers including ones who are current ABA examiners.
Preparation for the ABA Objective Structured Clinical Examination – This session occurs twice yearly in our simulation center with faculty volunteers who are current ABA examiners.
Simulation - Five half-day workshops dispersed throughout the year involving high-fidelity simulation training and debriefing sessions.
Pediatric Advanced Life Support - All fellows will be given the opportunity to participate in a high-fidelity PALS course in our simulation center which will result in obtaining an American Heart Association’s PALS Provider card.
Annual Fellows Boot Camp – Every August, a two-day immersive experience for fellows. Fellows have high-fidelity simulation training followed by a series of workshops including regional anesthesia, one-lung ventilation, difficult airway, and point of care ultrasound.
Advanced Boot Camp - This activity occurs in the second half of the year and will focus on advanced medical crisis management, disclosure of adverse events and medical supervision.
Committee Membership - All fellows are members of the Fellowship Selection Committee. In addition, fellows are encouraged to participate in our Department’s Quality Improvement and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committees.
