The Diabetes and Endocrinology division of the Pediatrics Department offers a four-week elective to third- and fourth-year medical students who have completed their core pediatrics rotation. The elective program is based at Texas Children's Hospital, which provides inpatient and outpatient acute, emergent, and subspecialty services. Texas Children's is the primary pediatric teaching hospital for Baylor College of Medicine.

The four-week course involves two weeks on the inpatient service and two weeks in the outpatient clinic. The student will have the opportunity to do consults and to follow service patients with daily notes under the supervision of the attending physician and our pediatric endocrine fellow. There is no night or weekend call. The clinical experience is broad. The students will learn about Type I & Type II diabetes in pediatric patients as well as thyroid disorders, adrenal insufficiency, ambiguous genitalia, growth and pituitary disorders. The student will give a PowerPoint presentation at the end of the elective.
