Surgical Procedures for Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Media Component

At the BCM Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center, we recognize the vital role that surgery plays in the management of conditions like Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. For instance, in Crohn's disease, surgery may involve removing a damaged portion of the intestine or repairing fistulas and strictures. In the case of ulcerative colitis, a surgery known as colectomy might be considered, where the colon is removed, and a pouch is created from the small intestine (J-pouch). Surgical options can be incredibly effective when carefully planned . Our interdisciplinary team of gastroenterologists, colorectal surgeons, and specialized nurses collaborate closely to assess each patient's unique needs. We ensure that surgery is well-integrated into the overall care plan, combining it with medications and lifestyle adjustments.
