Houston provides a range of educational opportunities for its citizens. There are 61 public school districts in the 8-county Houston Consolidated Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Houston Independent School District is the largest district in Texas, offering its students "magnet" school programs that allow them to focus on career-related courses. Area school districts also offer numerous specialized programs, which include multilingual programs, career and technology education, and enrichment programs to help students heighten their talents. Houston is also home to approximately 400 private or parochial schools.

In addition to Baylor College of Medicine, there are approximately 40 colleges and universities in the region.
