The MIEHR Center is focused on identifying key drivers of racial disparities in pregnancy outcomes, such a preterm birth and hypertensive disorders during pregnancy. Through its two research studies, the MIEHR Center studies how chemical and non-chemical exposures at the individual and neighborhood level from the biological, physical, and social environments – collectively referred to as the riskscape – affect maternal and infant health. The Investigator Development Core (IDC) oversees a Pilot Project Program for post-doctoral fellows, clinical fellows and assistant professors at Baylor and TSU. A Community Engagement and Dissemination Core (CEDC) engages with partners to seek their feedback on MIEHR activities and environmental issues of concern in their communities.
The Maternal and Infant Environmental Health Riskscape (MIEHR) Research Center is announcing funding up to $50,000 for pilot projects that address environmental health disparities among mothers and their children. Potential projects might address:
The disproportionate impact of the environment on health
- Concerns among communities of color about pollution using qualitative or quantitative methods
- The interplay between environmental, racial, or climate justice
- The impact of policies on environmental health disparities
- The use of multi-omics to elucidate racial/ethnic differences in effects due to environmental exposures
- Digital technology to improve environmental health literacy and reduce health disparities
Eligibility Criteria: Post-doctoral Fellows, Clinical Fellows, Assistant Professors, or NIH-designated Early-Stage Investigators.
Projects should be completed within 12 months (with a start date of April 1, 2024). The budget should not exceed $50,000 per project in direct costs (no indirect costs are allowed). We especially welcome applications from individuals from health disparity populations.
A Letter of Intent (LOI) is due Tuesday, Aug. 1 (by 11:59 p.m.) to MIEHRCenter@bcm.edu. Include:
- The applicant’s name, institution, department, position, and contact information.
- The title and research objectives of the proposed project.
- A statement on how the project aligns with MIEHR Center goals
- A brief description of how project findings will be disseminated.
- The NIH-designated health disparity population of the applicant (if applicable) or a statement about the diversity of the research team.
- The name, position, department, and institution of the faculty mentor (required).
