Baylor College of Medicine's Center for Educational Outreach has entered into an agreement with the Midland Independent School District (MISD) to create a district-wide STEM+M (science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine) pathway to help prepare middle and high school students for their future careers in the health and biomedical science fields. Starting August 2025, students in the STEM+M pathway will be equipped with engaging, inquiry-based STEM+M courses and learning opportunities that will foster long-term interest.

Development of the new programs is being made possible by a generous grant from the Scharbauer Foundation located in Midland. Baylor's Center for Educational Outreach faculty and educators will develop and adapt the STEM+M health and science curriculum materials and support MISD educators teaching these new courses with ongoing professional development workshops and coaching meetings.

District-wide, seventh and eighth grade students in the STEM+M pathway will develop their bioscience knowledge, problem-solving skills and career awareness with courses such as Neuroscience (seventh grade) and Principles of Biosciences – Biotechnology (eighth grade). High school students in the STEM+M pathway can select a specialized STEM+M program of study that will include a series of in-depth related courses grouped by interest or skill set to align with their four-year degree plan.

"The expanding STEM+M workforce requires early learner engagement with STEM+M curriculum and experiences that connect them to high-wage, in-demand STEM+M careers," said Dr. Matthew Blank, assistant professor in the Center for Educational Outreach. "Through this collaboration with MISD, we are continuing to engage young learners in STEM+M topics early in their academic journeys to increase their STEM+M skills that can apply to all subject areas."

BCM STEM+M pathways also have been implemented across Texas at select campuses in Corpus Christi ISD, Stafford Municipal School District and Houston ISD at the Baylor College of Medicine Academy at James D. Ryan Middle School, Baylor College of Medicine Biotech Academy at Rusk Middle School and the Michael E. DeBakey High School for Health Professions.
