Dr. O. H. Frazier has received the 2021 Scientific Achievement Award from the American Association for Thoracic Surgery. The award, established in 1994, serves to honor individuals who have achieved scientific contributions in the field of thoracic surgery worthy of the highest recognition the Association can bestow. Dr. Frazier was presented the award during the AATS 101st annual meeting.

For more than 40 years, Dr. Frazier has been a pioneer in the surgical treatment of severe heart failure, both in the fields of heart transplantation and mechanical support devices that may be used either to substitute for or assist the pumping action of the human heart. As a result of his work, the Texas Heart Institute and Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center has become one of the top transplantation and mechanical circulatory support programs in the world. Dr. Frazier has performed over 1,200 heart transplants and implanted more than 900 left ventricular assist devices, more than any other surgeon in the world. Dr. Frazier continues his research at the Texas Heart Institute in the pursuit of a meaningful and practical total artificial heart replacement.
