Dr. Pavan Reddy named director of Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center

Reddy specializes in hematological malignancies, and his research spans basic immunology to translational proof-of-concept clinical trials to improve outcomes after allogeneic hematopoietic transplantation. His work has been continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health for 20 years and by other foundations like the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, the National Marrow Donor Program and the American Society of Transplantation. His more than 200 original research articles have been published in Nature Medicine, Nature Immunology, the New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of Clinical Investigation, Lancet Oncology, Blood and PNAS.

“Dr. Reddy’s commitment to research that translates from the laboratory to the clinic will provide a tremendous benefit to our patients and the field of cancer care, and I know the cancer center will thrive under his leadership,” said Dr. Paul Klotman, president, CEO and executive dean of Baylor.

Reddy obtained his medical degree from Osmania Medical College in India. He completed his residency in internal medicine at the University of Missouri, Columbia and fellowships in hematology-oncology and blood and bone marrow transplantation at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Reddy joins Baylor after spending more than 20 years at the University of Michigan. He was the division chief of hematology-oncology and the deputy director of the University of Michigan Rogel Cancer Center for the last six years.

Together, with institutional leaders, outstanding faculty, exceptional investigators, healthcare professionals and trainees, I will work relentlessly to grow the center into an academic powerhouse that makes foundational discoveries that translate to the clinic and transform the care of cancer patients. On a personal note, my family (Madhu, my wife, and our children Sid, Saahith and Darwin) and I are excited to become part of the wonderful Houston community.”

Dr. Helen Heslop, who has served as interim director of the cancer center, will be deputy director. The Duncan Cancer Center is a National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center, recognizing the depth and breadth of clinical and basic science research, clinical research trials and service to cancer patients from diverse populations in the community. The center has more than 450 members, including laboratory researchers, surgical, medical and radiation oncologists, radiologists and pathologists providing comprehensive cancer care. Physicians provide patient care at multiple affiliated hospitals in Houston, including Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center, Texas Children’s Hospital, Harris Health System and the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
