Baylor College of Medicine School of Medicine is welcoming its inaugural class of medical students to its new regional campus in Temple, Texas.

“Baylor College of Medicine has a long history in Texas,” said Dr. Paul Klotman, president, CEO and executive dean of Baylor College of Medicine. “The start of the academic year at our new regional campus is yet another milestone in our service to the state and our efforts to advance the practice of medicine.”

The new campus is co-located with Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Temple, the Central Texas flagship of Baylor Scott & White Health, which is the largest not-for-profit health system in Texas.

“We are passionately dedicated to helping solve the shortage of caregivers facing the state,” said Dr. Alejandro Arroliga, who serves as both the regional dean of Baylor College of Medicine School of Medicine – Temple and the chief academic officer of Baylor Scott & White Health. “This is an exciting time for our institutions, as we welcome our students to this active learning environment made possible inside of Baylor Scott & White facilities as well as through collaborations with Temple College and University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.”

Medical students will begin training in both real and simulated environments from day one, learning and developing their skillsets in simulation labs and hospitals and out-patient offices with doctors, physician assistants and nurses, as well as other medical professionals.

“We are excited to welcome our first cohort of students at the new regional campus, and look forward to rolling out a new active-learning curriculum simultaneously on both campuses in Temple and Houston,” said Dr. Jennifer Christner, senior dean of Baylor’s School of Medicine and School of Health Professions.

After 15 months of didactic training, students will begin their required clinical rotations at the Baylor Scott & White Health campus and at the Central Texas Veterans Health Care System in Temple.

Forty students make up the group of first-year students. Ninety-two percent of the Temple students are from Texas, reinforcing the institutions’ mission to serve the state. The students in Temple join 186 students on the Houston campus in Baylor College of Medicine’s Class of 2027.
