Professional Statement
Dr. C. Anne Morrison is a physician in the Baylor College of Medicine Global Health Corps. For the last year she has been teaching and practicing at Sengerema Designated District Hospital (SDDH), a 250-bed, district-level hospital located in rural Tanzania. SDDH is a poor, under-funded public hospital that serves a catchment area of half a million people while simultaneously serving as a training site for nursing students and low-level medical providers (clinical officers and assistant medical officers (AMO). Dr. Morrison is one of only three physicians in the entire hospital, and was specifically recruited to SDDH in order to provide specialized surgical care not previously available at this site, as well as to train AMO students during their 8-week surgical rotations. The year 2012 was the first time that SDDH had been used as a clinical training site for AMO students, and was a tremendous success allowing for a lower instructor-to-student ratio than the one in the larger teaching hospital where clinical rotations usually took place. Recently, Dr. Morrison was granted the Ralph D Feigin, MD, UpToDate Pediatric Subscription Award. This award program grants up to six, three-year subscriptions to UpToDate to physicians, other health care providers, or health care facilities that provide care to underserved or low-income populations that could not otherwise afford the subscription. The award will allow Dr. Morrison to teach AMO students how to use the internet for self-directed learning using modern, current literature, rather than relying solely on textbooks which are typically grossly outdated and in poor condition. Her primary interest is in the role of general surgery within the context of global health. My current research projects focus on cost-effective methods for improving surgical outcomes in extremely resource-poor hospitals in the third-world setting; and developing an educational model for training non-physician health care workers to perform surgical procedures in a rural sub-Saharan African setting. I also collect data on interesting case reports & Case series of rare or advanced surgical illnesses not often reported in the surgical literature.Websites
