Professional Statement
Dr. Andropoulos leads a Department of over 50 fellowship trained pediatric anesthesiologists, performing over 35,000 anesthetics annually, ranging from simple outpatient surgeries, to complex cardiac and neurosurgical cases of over 12 hours’ duration. The Department’s philosophy is to provide the highest quality, individualized anesthesia care for every child. The TCH Department of Anesthesiology is a national leader in clinical care, safety and quality, education, and research.Dr. Andropoulos is the editor of two textbooks: Anesthesia for Congenital Heart Disease, 2nd edition, published in 2010, where he serves as Editor in Chief, along with Drs. Stephen Stayer and Emad Mossad from TCH. He is also the co-editor of Gregory’s Pediatric Anesthesia, 5th Edition, published in 2012.
Dr. Andropoulos is the author of over 50 peer-reviewed articles, and 20 textbook chapters relating to pediatric anesthetic research and clinical care. His research interests include neurological outcomes, and brain protection for infant cardiac surgery, and clinical studies of anesthetic neurotoxicity. He has received research funding from the National Institutes of Health, and the Charles A. Dana Foundation, and is a Co-Principal Investigator for the Texas Children’s Hospital/Baylor College of Medicine Pediatric Heart Network Core Clinical Center; a National Institutes of Health funded clinical research network. He is also the principal investigator for the TEXANs Study—designed to investigate the long term effects of anesthesia during infancy and make anesthesia safer for children.
Dr. Andropoulos received a Master’s Degree in Healthcare Management from the Harvard School of Public Health in 2007, and has used this knowledge to lead the quality improvement efforts of his Department, and contribute to the strategic and leadership missions of TCH.
On a national level, Dr. Andropoulos is Founding Director, and first President of the Congenital Cardiac Anesthesia Society, which now has over 600 members devoted to clinical care, education, and training. He is the leader of the Pediatric Anesthesia Leadership Council Task Force on Advanced Pediatric Anesthesia Fellowship Training, and is on the Writing Committee for the American Board of Anesthesiology Pediatric Anesthesia Examination. He is an elected member of the Association of University Anesthesiologists, and serves as a member of its Scientific Advisory Board. He is also a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of SmartTots, a Public-Private Partnership of the FDA, NIH, International Anesthesia Research Society, and Society for Pediatric Anesthesia, with a mission of funding research on the vital issue of anesthetic neurotoxicity in infants and children.
