Guilherme Vianna Silva, M.D, is Director of Structural Heart Disease at Baylor College of Medicine and at the Texas Heart Institute, and Assistant Professor at Baylor College of Medicine. He is board certified in Cardiovascular Disease, Interventional Cardiology, Internal Medicine, Nuclear Cardiology and Echocardiography.Dr. Silva earned his medical degree from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil and subsequently trained for three years in Cardiology. After coming to the United States, he completed postgraduate training in Internal Medicine at The University of Texas-Houston, as well as four years in Research and Adult Cardiology at the Texas Heart Institute in Houston. Dr. Silva held the position of Chief Cardiology Fellow at Texas Heart Institute and was awarded The Tauber Award for Outstanding Cardiology Fellow. Dr. Silva also completed his Interventional Cardiology Fellowship at the Texas Heart Institute was Chief Interventional Cardiology Fellow during that time. Dr. Silva subsequently completed a fellowship at the Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School in Structural Heart Disease.
The major focus of Dr. Silva has been in cardiovascular disease research. He is one of the pioneers in the utilization of stem cells for treating heart attacks and heart failure. He has over 60 publications in peer-reviewed literature, over 100 abstracts, and 13 books and book chapters along with multiple invitations to teach in the United States and South America. This is a testament of his commitment to clinical research and patient care. Dr. Silva’s academic work includes topics such as: stem cell therapy for heart disease, interventional cardiology, coronary imaging, and structural heart disease interventions.
Dr. Silva is an expert in complex interventional cardiology procedures, as well as structural heart disease interventions and procedures. Dr. Silva specializes in percutaneous techniques to treat Mitral Valve Disease, as well as MitraClip, a less-invasive treatment option for those with mitral regurgitation who are high risk for surgery. Dr Silva and his Team also perform Transcatheter Mitral Valve Replacement (TMVR) and Pascal Tricuspid Transcatheter Edge-to-Edge Repair (TEER).
