Professional Statement
Dr. Lombaard is a registered Maternal and Fetal Medicine specialist. He is interested in high-risk obstetrics, maternal medicine in pregnancy which includes renal disease in pregnancy, endocrine disorders in pregnancy and diabetes in pregnancy. He has an interest in invasive fetal medicine and is comfortable doing the various invasive diagnostic procedures for chromosomal and genetic disorders in pregnancy.Dr. Lombaard believes that care should be patient centered and holistic. He completed his residency at the University of Pretoria in South Africa and obtained a masters degree in Obstetrics and Gynecology with his research focus on gynecological critical incidents. He was also admitted as Fellow of the College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of the College of Medicine of South Africa. Dr. Lombaard received training as a maternal fetal medicine specialist at the University of Pretoria and in Bristol (UK) and Leuven (Belgium).
He has an interest in quality improvement and was part of the faculty who developed the Essential Steps in Managing Obstetric Emergencies in South Africa. Dr. Lombaard also has a special interest in Medical Education and obtained a Post Graduate Diploma in Health Sciences Education from the University of the Witwatersrand. He is a Fellow of SAFRI that focus on medical education and research and trained several fellows in Maternal and Fetal Medicine in South Africa. Additionally, Dr. Lombaard was also supervisor of several master’s students in South Africa. He has an interest in the mental health of medical personnel and did several studies on burnout.
Dr. Lombaard is member of the South African Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecology, The South African Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynaecology where he also served on the National executive council from 2007 until 2021. In this capacity he was part of the development of several national protocols. He acted as reviewer of several international journals is external moderator for the University of Namibia. During his time in South Africa Dr. Lombaard established the first unit for invasive treatment of complicated twin pregnancies.
