Professional Statement
I completed my pediatric residency at Jackson Memorial Hospital, University of Miami, in 2005. I went on to work as a general pediatrician in South Florida emergency until I began fellowship in 2005. I completed my pediatric emergency medicine (PEM) fellowship at Texas Children’s Hospital (TCH), Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) in 2010. From July of 2010 to July of 2011, I completed an emergency ultrasound fellowship with the University of Texas Medical School at Houston while continuing to work at TCH. I obtained certification in medical sonography in 2012. I am currently an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Baylor. The practice of PEM is a gratifying subspecialty in itself. My passion, however, is point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) and its application in the care of acutely ill infants and children.I am the director of pediatric POCUS for the PEM section. As the director, I am charged with trying to ensure the physicians in the PEM section are appropriately trained in the applications of POCUS as it pertains to PEM. In addition to the coordination of education, I assist in machine acquisition, maintenance and physician recruitment. I am also responsible for developing, monitoring and revising both the QA and credentialing processes. I am actively involved in several POCUS related research projects throughout our section, and we also participate in multi-center studies. My leadership in the section of emergency medicine has lead to my involvement in POCUS education in other pediatric sections, including surgery, critical care medicine and global health. I assisted with the planning and development of the pediatric POCUS fellowship that began in July of 2015.
In 2018 I was appointed the American Academy of Pediatrics, Section on Emergency Medicine (SOEM) Ultrasound Program chair. This is a 3-year appointment during which I am responsible for all of the SOEM POCUS programming held at the AAP NCE. I am an active member in the P2 Network for PEM POCUS. This is a growing community of physicians committed to spreading the clinical application of POCUS to pediatric emergency departments around the world. In this group I serve as a research committee member and am leading a collaborative, multi-center project aimed at creating a validated PEM POCUS examination. I am also serving as a committee member for the section of Pediatric Emergency Medicine in the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP). I remain involved in other sections of ACEP and of the American Academy of Pediatrics. I completed the ACEP teaching fellowship in March of 2014.
