Professional Statement
Dr. Merchant was born in Houston, Texas, and has called this city his home ever since. He attended Baylor College of Medicine for Medical School and continued training here for his residency in Internal Medicine. After completing his residency training in 2019, he stayed on as faculty at Baylor College of Medicine, as a hospitalist at Baylor St Luke’s Medical Center. Through that time, he has rooted himself in the city further through engagement in various academic and civic endeavors. He has worked on projects related to public policy, social determinants of health, refugee health, and diversity. He designed and conducted an educational intervention for Internal Medicine residents and medical students on Structural Competency and later in Environmental Health. These projects aimed to give trainees a tool with which to assess and understand the various challenges our patients face as a result of structural vulnerabilities and social determinants of health. These interests and activities have shaped the vision he has for his career as a Physician.Websites
