Physiological Data Processing

Massive amounts of data are generated each day by patients admitted to the Intensive Care Units of Texas Children's Hospital. Physicians must routinely make sense of this data to diagnosis and treat patients as well as intervene if there is a problem. The Rusin Lab focuses on developing technologies that can process physiological data from patients in real-time to aid physicians in their clinical decision making.   Just as a GPS device helps a driver navigate through complex roadways and avoid traffic, the decision support algorithms we develop assist doctors in navigating through complex clinical questions while helping them forecast and avoid critical events such as cardiac arrest and unexpected intubation. We are leverage the massive growth in computing power and data analytics to get the right information, in the hands of the right physician, at the right time so that they can make the best decision possible.

Current Studies

We are currently studying critical deterioration in children with hypoplastic left heart syndrome and related lesions. Our goal is to create a new metric which forecasts the likelihood of a deterioration event in this population within the next 1-2 hours, allowing time for early interventions to be applied. This research is funded in part by the Pediatric Heart Network, of which Texas Children's Hospital is a member and a core site.
