Endometriosis is classically defined as the presence of endometrial glands and stroma outside of the endometrial lining and uterine musculature. About 10 percent of reproductive-aged women suffer from symptoms of endometriosis, such as pelvic pain and infertility. However, there is no effective endometriosis therapeutic plan because the molecular etiology of endometriosis is not clearly elucidated yet.

The goal of our laboratory is to define a new molecular mechanism to explain how endometriosis initiates and progresses in reproductive-aged women. Based on our results, we will finally develop a new paradigm for endometriosis treatment to increase the efficiency of endometriosis treatment and reduce the harmful side effects of current estrogen depletion therapy.

To achieve this goal, we have generated various genetically modified mouse models and developed surgically induced
endometriosis mouse model by auto- or hetero-transplantation of endometrial tissues. Also, we will employ the human endometriotic tissues for the preclinical study of endometriosis.
