Research Mentor Training
Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, along with Faculty Affairs and Faculty Development, support internal mentor training and training with collaboration through the Gulf Coast Consortia. Faculty who mentor students and trainees in the biomedical and clinical and translational sciences are encouraged to attend these trainings that utilize primarily CIMER curricula and qualify as evidence-based mentor training for National Institutes of Health and National Science Foundation Interests. Check the Workshop Calendar below for upcoming sessions.
Mentor Training Requirements
Graduate Faculty must complete mentor training, based on evidence-based practices, with a minimum frequency of once every five years. Initial training requires at least three hours of training. Subsequently, a minimum of one hour of mentor training is required every five years. For faculty new to BCM, mentor training must occur within the first year of Graduate Faculty membership.
Effective Jan. 1, 2025, acceptable/current mentor training is required to join an additional graduate program.
Effective Aug. 1, 2025, acceptable/current mentor training is required to accept a new Ph.D. student into a lab as their major advisor.
Initial Training Requirement
At least three hours of training based on evidence-based practices, e.g., based on the National Research Mentoring Network (NRMN) and/or Center for the Improvement of Mentored Experiences in Research (CIMER) curriculum. Training can be done at BCM, the Gulf Coast Consortium, or other venues.
Training Options: For those with no prior mentor training, please plan to take the three-hour Research Mentor Training–Core Mentoring Essentials or six-hour Research Mentor Training– Foundations.
Subsequent Training Requirement
A minimum of one hour of mentor training is required every five years for faculty to maintain a ‘trained’ status. Current options for mentor training refreshers (e.g., Brown Bag Session) are available in the Research Mentor Workshops Calendar.
Training Options: For those needing to refresh their training, you may select a “Brown Bag Mentoring Refreshers” session that is offered monthly in partnership with the Gulf Coast Consortia (GCC).
