Maternity and Paternity Leave
Fellows may be permitted leave in accordance with the Federal Medical Leave Act (FMLA) for the birth of a child or the adoption or foster placement of a child. Fellows taking leave under FMLA for his or her own health condition must first use sick days, and if necessary, may take any available paid vacation and personal time off. Medical leave is available for those not meeting the minimum requirements for leave under FMLA.
Health Care Benefits
Fellows are provided with medical, dental, life, and accidental death & dismemberment insurance with premiums paid by the program. In the event a fellow becomes seriously ill or sustains an injury requiring absence from work for more than six months, long-term disability insurance is provided at no cost. Fellows can also enroll in Baylor short-term disability plan at their own expense.
Medical coverage is provided through the ResidentCare medical plan. The ResidentCare network includes physicians from several practice organizations and a full complement of services offered through affiliated hospitals. Coverage for inpatient and outpatient psychiatric care is included in the medical plan. In addition, there is a psychiatric counseling service, staffed by Baylor faculty, which offers up to 12 free sessions to trainees and their spouses or significant others.
Professional Liability
Fellows receive free professional liability insurance coverage in limits that exceed $1 million per occurrence and $3 million in the aggregate through the Baylor College of Medicine Self-Insurance Program. With occurrence coverage, the program will respond to a claim after the fellow leaves Baylor as long as the claim is based on treatment rendered during the formal training experience.
Educational Support
Fellows are permitted to travel to approved educational conferences when presenting an accepted poster, abstract, or oral presentation up to $2,500 per meeting. Additional meetings are permitted on a case-by-case basis at the discretion of program leadership.
Professional Memberships and Certifications
Memberships in the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), American College of Cardiology (ACC), American Heart Assocition (AHA) and recertification of Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) is provided at no cost to the Fellow.
Trainee Wellness
Fellows have access to memberships at the Baylor Gym, as well as discounts at area health clubs, along with many other benefits available through our BeWell Program.
