The Resident Wellness Curriculum was developed with the goals of acknowledging and actively combating resident burnout. It is comprised of three key components described below. Our Wellness initiatives have received excellent feedback from our residents with measurable improvements in burnout indices. Our initiatives have received national attention at a variety of conferences, most recently as a podium presentation at the AUA and as an editorial piece in the Urology Times.
- The Resident Wellness Fund: Funded entirely by generous donations from all Baylor Urology academic and volunteer faculty, this provides a valuable financial resource for resident initiatives in the realm of Wellness. This fund has been used for wellness events, such as a paintball match between residents and attendings, a Dave and Busters resident game night, Secret Santa parties, and many more. It’s also been used to assist with dining, purchase of furniture, or anything else the residents find would better the resident experience.
- Resident-Attending Social Groups: Urology attendings are matched with a group of two to three residents to engage in a social fashion with no other agenda. The goal was to bolster relationships and build rapport outside of the professional environment and it's been a great success. This type of program lowers barriers for academic mentorships and highlights our attendings as accessible and approachable. Examples include dining with an attending and their family at their house, grabbing a casual drink at a hip new bar, breakfast at a local coffee shop, Axe-Throwing, bowling, and many more.
- Wellness Didactics: Intermittent lectures from our own faculty and from Wellness experts outside the department have been incorporated into the routine resident conference schedule. Topics have included meditation, mindfulness, sleep, financial health, and exercise advice.
