Qualities We Look for in an Applicant

  • GPA (3.0 and greater)
  • Depth and length of research experiences
  • Defined goals, interests and motivation
  • Ability to discuss research experiences
  • Knowledge of current scientific events/papers

Eligible Applicants are Underrepresented College Graduates

The BCM PREP program is funded by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences R25 GM056929-23 grant to support college graduates who are underrepresented (UR) in science and medicine to enter and succeed in rigorous biomedical Ph.D. programs, as stipulated by the Notice of NIH Interest in Diversity NOT-OD-20-31, and summarized below:

  • U.S. citizens, non-citizen nationals or individuals lawfully admitted for permanent residency 
  • Were awarded a baccalaureate degree no more than 36 months prior to applying
  • Black or African American
  • Hispanic or Latinx
  • American Indian or Alaska Native
  • Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islanders
  • Individuals with disabilities
  • Individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds
  • Women in math-intensive research
  • Sexual and gender minorities

Ineligible to apply if:

Currently enrolled in a degree program, received a master's degree, have previously earned a graduate or professional degree, or awarded a bachelor’s degree more than 36 months prior to applying.

Not underrepresented populations in the U.S. biomedical enterprise

Application Process

The application portal is now open and the final application deadline is May 1. Applications received by Feb. 1 will be considered for early review and are strongly encouraged. Late applications will be considered on a space-available basis.

Applications are considered complete once the three (3) letters of recommendation are received on or before the first Monday in March deadline.

Well-ranked applicants will be notified for interviews in January (early consideration) and March (regular consideration). The application review process will be completed in late March.

Be it on campus, virtual or hybrid, research experiences will begin as scheduled.
