Ultraviolet Light Treatment

Master
Content

Light therapy is a good treatment for a variety of conditions (psoriasis, eczema, vitiligo, mycosis fungoides, and other skin problems). Most patients require 20-30 treatments to see results, depending on their condition. Baylor Medicine Dermatology has two different types of ultraviolet light boxes, UVA and UVB. The treatments are 3-5 times per week and each only takes a few minutes. The side effects of light treatment are mild compared to other potent therapies, but include sunburn and slightly increased risk of skin cancer.

PUVA (Psoralen + UVA)
A powerful treatment that combines Ultraviolet A Light with a medication that makes the skin more UV sensitive. Treatments are quick and the effect can be long-lasting. PUVA treatment is carefully timed so that there is a high concentration of psoralen in the skin when the ultraviolet light is administered.

Narrowband UVB
The latest Ultraviolet Light therapy. Effectiveness is similar to PUVA for most patients, but without the need for medication or other PUVA side effects. Narrowband UV light treatment is offered at Baylor Medicine for adults and at Texas Children's Hospital for children.
