Professional Statement
I am a Full Professor of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology. I am the Chair of the Radiology Peer Review Committee and Director of Quality Improvement. I am the Department of Radiology Lead Educational Officer. I provide patient care at The Harris Health System (Ben Taub General Hospital and Smith Clinic) where I teach medical student and residents, and at The Faculty Group Practice (Baylor Clinic and McNair Campus). I have completed a subspecialty fellowship in Abdominal Imaging and Intervention at the Cleveland Clinic in 2002 and specialize in Body Imaging providing Oncologic Imaging for the D.L. Duncan Cancer Center. I am a member of Baylor’s Lung Institute with expertise in Mesothelioma Imaging. I have established new clinical services such as the Inflammatory Bowel and Prostate Imaging in collaboration with other specialists. Although I am a subspecialist, I practice the full spectrum of General, trauma and ER Radiology. I interpret radiographs, ultrasound, Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Computed Tomography. I perform CT and US-guided biopsies and drainages, arthrography and fluoroscopic guided joint injections, catheter and tube placement, GI and GU Imaging with fluoroscopy, vascular access/catheter placement, myelography and fluoroscopic guided lumbar punctures (unique kill set which allows me to staff any of our hospitals or clinics with a solo on-site radiologist). I provide charity community service by interpreting Chest X-rays at the city of Houston TB Clinic. I am very involved in leadership and administration at the local and national levels. As Director of Quality Control and as the Chair of the Peer Review Committee, I monitor and document radiology faculty performance aiming to achieve the best patient care possible and assure compliance with OPPE, assisting with preparation for site visits and faculty credentialling. I am a member of the American College of Radiology Peer Review Committee which is tasked with establishing national quality assurance guidelines and benchmarks for the specialty. I have led many Practice Quality Improvement projects focused on evidence-based medicine and patient safety. In 2015 I led an award-winning project which resulted in a significant decrease of unnecessary CTs for Pulmonary Embolism at BTGH which was used by the ACR to secure a $2.9 million grant from the CMS (TCPI) to further research and promote value-based clinical imaging. In the past 19 years, I have participated and led numerous, multidisciplinary tumor board conferences where radiologist input is very impactful in treatment decisions adding value to patient care. I have been either a member or chair of Practice Improvement Committees in the hospitals. I have championed Clinical Decision Support and Imaging Appropriateness aiming to decrease over-utilization, radiation exposure and costs. I have received numerous clinical and educational awards including the Star Award for Clinical Excellence, the Fulbright and Jaworski Award for Teaching and Evaluation and the Norton-Rose Fulbright Award for educational leadership. I have received also numerous awards for having authored and edited hundreds of American Board of Radiology type preparation questions for the RadExam, a National web-based Peer-Reviewed question item and exam database from the Association of Program Directors in Radiology (APDR), American Board of Radiology and the American College of Radiology. I have published extensively in the topics of Radiology and Medical Education with dozens of articles with near 1000 citations. I have been a member and chaired several national societies committees including the American College of Radiology RADPEER committee, as well as several Radiology Research Alliance (Association of University Radiologists) Task-Forces. I have been invited and presented at numerous national and international societies meetings.Websites
