Summary
Congratulations! You just finished another module and learned how to make a plan of action for fears that are closely related to core traits autism. Here are some summary points:
- Sometimes, issues and behaviors can be rooted in anxiety AND be related to core traits of autism.
- When autism related anxiety starts to interfere with your child’s life or your family’s life, it can be helpful to make a plan of action to work on these fears.
- For these types of fears and worries, it is important to:
- Consider a goal that is consistent with who your child is and that takes their autistic traits into account. If your child is afraid of situations with loud noises, the goal might be to sit through that situation (e.g., a school assembly) with the help of noise-cancelling headphones.
- Make plans that are more gradual with multiple smaller exposure activities.
- Feel free to get creative when making more gradual plans. Brainstorm ways you can incorporate audio clips, pictures, or videos.
Over the next week...
- Practice the activities in your child’s current plans!
- Refer to Module 4 to make a new plan of action for any fears related to traits of autism. Be sure to talk with your child and incorporate their opinion when making this plan.
