Community Network for Cancer Prevention

Content

The Community Network for Cancer Prevention was established by the Office of Outreach and Health Disparities of the Duncan Cancer Center in 2010 with funding from the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas to initially enhance colorectal and cervical cancer prevention and control services for the medically underserved residents of Harris County. Through the years, we have received additional funding from CPRIT to enhance breast cancer prevention and control services, as well as improve HPV vaccination rates and reduce the use of tobacco products among the youth.

The CNCP is a network made up of several institutions in the Texas Medical Center and several community-based organizations across the greater Houston area and surrounding counties.

Through the years, the CNCP has met regularly to discuss project-specific matters; then, as our cancer prevention efforts and relationships evolved, CNCP members are now key collaborating partners of an expanded Duncan Cancer Center Community Advisory Board.

Community Advisory Board

Content

Our Community Advisory Board was formed for project-specific purposes as part of the Community Network for Cancer Prevention and has continued to grow to its current 16 institutional members.

As part of our ongoing assessment of the cancer burden in our catchment area, we utilize a community-based participatory research approach with our CAB to monitor cancer needs and ensure the equitable bi-directional exchange of knowledge between communities and researchers in the Duncan Cancer Center.

During our CAB quarterly meetings, cancer burden and disparities data for the Duncan Cancer Center are presented, and discussions are generated around the cancer analyses, and community needs assessment findings.

If your organization is interested in being a part of our CAB, contact us at cancerprevention@bcm.edu.
