Well Woman Exams

Content

A well-woman exam is an annual checkup and is an important part of staying healthy. During this visit, you will have an opportunity to discuss any health concerns you may have. Your provider will collect a thorough medical history, conduct an examination (including a breast exam and pelvic exam as needed), and perform laboratory tests as needed (such as testing for: sexually transmitted infections, PAP smears to screen for cervical cancer, diabetes, anemia, high cholesterol). If you need contraception, your provider can start you on this as well. You may be provided with referrals for specialists if needed. This is an excellent opportunity for you to learn about how best you can care for your body and mind.

There are annual check-ups for young women who are sexually active. The doctor will examine your pelvic area, including the vagina and cervix. Starting at age 21, the pelvic exam will include a pap smear, a painless procedure in which the doctor takes a sampling of cells from your cervix with a Q-tip. These cells are sent to the laboratory and checked for abnormalities and indications of cervical cancer. The doctor will also examine your breasts by gently feeling for lumps or other abnormalities in the breast tissue.
