Welcome to the Section of General Internal Medicine
We are delighted you are interested in our clinical, scientific, and educational missions. Whether you are a prospective patient, trainee, or collaborator, we invite you to explore all that we offer in advancing primary care and hospital-based internal medicine.
Our mission is to improve health and well-being through excellence in comprehensive care, education, research, and community engagement. We are proud to be home to more than 300 faculty and staff serving across nine clinical locations in Greater Houston, including Baylor Medicine, Baylor St. Luke’s Hospitals, Harris Health, and the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center.
Our faculty lead interdisciplinary teams that deliver innovative, evidence-based care to diverse patient populations. We are committed to advancing equity and access, including through initiatives such as the addition of the San Felipe Clinic. The section conducts more than 70,000 outpatient visits and 300,000 inpatient visits annually, consistently achieving top scores in patient experience and quality metrics.
Education and training are central to our mission. Our faculty train approximately 400 trainees annually across inpatient and outpatient settings. Many serve in important leadership roles within the medical school and the residency program. They are recognized annually with institutional and national teaching awards and lead the implementation of innovative curriculum design and mentorship programs.
Our section is a hub for scholarly activity focused on health systems science, population health, education, and the social determinants of health. Faculty have secured competitive grants, published more than 40 peer-reviewed papers in the past year, and presented nationally across academic societies. Our section members are leading efforts to study cancer survivorship, space medicine, opioid use disorders, food insecurity, quality improvement, and health equity.
Thank you for visiting.
