Medical Biochemical Genetics Rotations and Call Schedule

Biochemical genetics fellows take call from home for five months per year (with two weekends off each call month).  There is no call for biochemical genetics fellows during the outpatient clinic or diagnostic laboratory months.  Biochemical genetics fellows have three weeks of vacation each year.  The following is a representative biochemical genetics fellow schedule:

Metabolism Inpatient Consult Service (5 months)

Content
  • Lead the management of inborn errors of metabolism for children and adults admitted to Texas Children’s Hospital or Baylor-St. Luke’s Hospital with attending physician supervision
  • Participate in inpatient genetics consultations for children and adults at Texas Children’s Hospital and Pavilion for Women, Baylor-St. Luke’s Hospital, Ben Taub Hospital and Texas Woman’s Hospital if there is a concern for a metabolic disorder
  • Work with nurses, genetic counselors and genetics residents to assist physicians, parents and newborn screening nurses with patient management concerns
  • Participate in weekly outpatient diagnostic evaluations and chronic management of children and adults with inborn errors of metabolism
  • Participate in weekly biochemical genetics case review meetings and journal club

Metabolic Outpatient Clinic – Texas Children’s Hospital (6 months)

Content
  • Participate in weekly outpatient diagnostic evaluations and chronic management of children and adults with inborn errors of metabolism
  • For at least one of the six months, the fellow will also work with the team that manages lysosomal storage disease therapies
  • Participate in weekly biochemical genetics case review meetings and journal club
  • Lead a quality improvement project in the biochemical genetics clinic
  • Participate in basic science, translational, or clinical research projects related to inborn errors of metabolism

Biochemical Genetics Laboratory – Baylor Genetics Laboratory (1 month)

  • Observe laboratory techniques and interpretation of laboratory results
  • Participate in weekly biochemical genetics case review meetings and journal club
