There is an urgent need for medical geneticists in the United States as the field of genetics and genomics is growing rapidly. The Office of Community Engagement and Equity invites fourth-year medical students to rotate with Baylor College of Medicine faculty in the Department of Molecular and Human Genetics. During this four-week-long program, students will be able to rotate between a clinical genetics area and a genetics/genomics laboratory while working with a faculty mentor in each area. Clinical rotations will take place at Texas Children’s Hospital, Baylor CHI St. Luke’s Medical Center and Harris Health.
Program Goals
- Enhance awareness of the Medical Genetics and Genomics field
- Increase U.S. medical students applying to Medical Genetics Residency Programs
- Give students an opportunity to experience training at Baylor College of Medicine
- Provide mentoring and networking opportunities for fourth year medical students
Eligibility
- Enrolled in medical degree-granting programs
- Participate with MHG Outreach activities (A White Coat and Genes: The Life of a Medical Geneticist, Medical Genetics Visiting Students Program and Careers in Genetics and Genomics: Pathways to Careers Investigating the Genome Using Life's Blueprint)
- U.S. citizen or permanent resident
Travel Scholarship
- Travel, room and board provided to defray cost while visiting Baylor College of Medicine for this program.
How to Apply
The application process is a two-step process.
1. Interested applicant must complete the MG Visiting Students Program Pre-application.
2. If notified of acceptance, then interested applicant must apply through the Visiting Student Learning Opportunities (VSLO).
Applications for each program year are accepted from third-year medical students Dec. 1 through March 15. The visiting students program takes place between August and October.
