Residents are involved in many research efforts alongside their global surgery partners with the goal of improving surgical infrastructure, outcomes, and access. Their work has led to 11 grants, 43 abstracts presented at national and international conferences, 32 publications in academic journals, and over 100 invited lectures for renowned organizations such as the World Health Organization, Global Initiative for Emergency and Essential Surgical Care, the American College of Surgeons, Pan African Pediatric Surgery Association and the College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa.
Research topics include ethics in global surgery, global surgery education, sustainability in global surgery, surgical infrastructure design in resource-limited settings, pediatric oncologic disease burden, remote and robotic surgery in austere environments.
Global Surgery Research Elective (MESUR – 563)
An estimated 5 billion people do not have access to safe, timely, and affordable surgical care. The field of academic global surgery is dedicated to the improvement in quality surgery and anesthesia access through greater understanding and enhancement of surgical infrastructure.
During this rotation, medical students examine key questions of surgical disparities worldwide and participate in rigorous research. Students work with global surgery faculty to formulate key research questions, develop an understanding of ethical approaches to global surgery scholarship and complete new and existing global and disparities-related studies.
The main objectives for this research elective are:
- Participate in a clinical research project investigating the roles and interactions of patients with different health care systems
- Examine clinical pathways in optimizing health systems
- Demonstrate the rationale for reporting and addressing events that could affect patient safety
MESUR – 563 is a 4-week pass/fail non-clinical research elective open to all Baylor and visiting medical students that have completed their Surgery Core Clerkship. Please find the link below to learn more.
