Department of Surgery Divisions and Centers

The division faculty members and the staff of the Liver, Kidney, and Pancreas Center support adult and pediatric transplant programs across the Texas Medical Center.

The surgeons and researchers of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery are innovating strategies for the evaluation and treatment of diseases of the aorta and cardiovascular system.

The division has been a leader in the world of transplant and circulatory support surgery, performing more than 1,300 heart transplants and over 1,200 VAD implants, making it one of the world’s highest-volume programs.

From its inception in 1954 as one of the first of its kind, the division has become a world leader in pediatric congenital heart surgery. The division provides surgical care for children and adults with congenital and acquired cardiovascular disease.

The David J. Sugarbaker Division of Thoracic Surgery and the Lung Institute, integrates medical and surgical treatments for benign and malignant non-cardiac thoracic diseases.

Our bariatric surgery faculty have a special interest in surgical treatment, research and education of obesity-related diseases.

The division faculty members and staff physicians at Texas Children’s Hospital combine dedication to patient care with exceptional education and training, advanced research, and development of a broad range of better treatments and individualized surgical procedures that range from the routine to the highly complex.

Faculty in the Division of Plastic Surgery combine the science of medicine with the art of patient care in their practices, which include the the clinic and hospital services at Texas Children’s Hospital, the Lee and Joe Jamail Specialty Care Center, Ben Taub Hospital, Houston Methodist Hospital, MD Anderson Cancer Center, the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center, and the pediatric clinics and hospital services at Texas Children’s Hospital.

The Division of Surgical Oncology includes specialized surgeons focused on breast surgery within the Lester and Sue Smith Breast Center, endocrine surgery within the Thyroid and Parathyroid Center, colorectal surgery focused on minimally invasive, laparoscopic, robotic, and transanal surgical procedures, and pancreas surgery within the Elkins Pancreas Center.

The Division of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery brings an array of trauma services to the Texas Medical Center while at the same time introducing closed-unit critical care and acute care surgery services campus-wide.

The division offers a full array of minimally invasive endovascular interventions as well as traditional open surgical procedures ranging from a new limb salvage program to treatment for complex vascular trauma.

The Center for Global Surgery offers a variety of programs in global surgery for residents, fellows and doctors with the goal of producing skilled surgeons who can provide safe surgical care in low-resourced areas.
