Registration for the Michael E. DeBakey Summer Surgery Program begins Oct. 1 and closes at 11:59 p.m., Feb. 1 of each year. Applicants must be a currently enrolled, undergraduate, pre-medical, college student interested in pursuing a medical career and have completed at least the sophomore year of their undergraduate studies. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age at the time of application in compliance the Hospital requirements as well as COVID immunizations fully up to date which includes in compliance to Baylor College of Medicine and its participating sites. Additional immunizations records required at the time of onboarding to those accepted within HR requirements. While there is no application fee, students must carefully follow the instructions below to ensure a completed application is complete and submitted.
The application is online and the required supplemental materials are listed below. The completed application and additional materials must be received by the Feb. 1 deadline, after which all completed applications are reviewed. Applications will not be reviewed on a rolling basis. Those candidates selected to participate in the program will be notified by e-mail before the end of April. Students who have not been accepted into the program will also receive an email notification.
Due to the high volume of applications, emails, and phone calls received, we are unable to verify receipt of applications and the required supplemental documents for an application. It will be the student’s responsibility to ensure that their application is complete with the required documents. Applicants are encouraged to contact your recommender to ensure that they have submitted your letter on time. The committee will not review any applications that have any missing supplemental documents.

Program Dates
The 2024 summer program dates are Monday, June 3 to Friday, July 26 for the 8-week program.

Application Requirements
Complete the on-line process only with application and all of the supplemental documents items listed below. Do not mail or email application or documents listed. If you have any issues submitting the application, email the Surgery Education Office at medstudentprogram@bcm.edu.
- Completed application
- Professional headshot photographs
- College transcripts. (Unofficial transcripts are acceptable.)
- Personal statement (one page/single spaced)
- Resume/CV
- Three letters of recommendation

Housing and Stipends
At this time, there is no stipend or housing provided. Housing options are made individually by each applicant on their own.
