Interventional Pulmonology

Media Component
Bronchoscopy Lab, VA Medical Center

Our Interventional Pulmonology Program offers advanced diagnostic and therapeutic bronchoscopic procedures as well as pleural procedures throughout our medical institutions: Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center, Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center, Ben Taub Hospital, and Houston Methodist Hospital. Our dedicated team is composed of interventional pulmonologists, thoracic surgeons, head and neck surgeons, and anesthesiologists. Together, they provide a multidisciplinary approach which is essential to manage patients with complex airway, lung and pleural diseases.

Our team constantly strives to improve both diagnostic and therapeutic techniques through sound clinical research. Both state-of-the-art clinical services and experimental trials are part of our daily practice. Our formally trained interventional pulmonologists are recognized leaders in this field, with active roles in national and international societies. In addition, our staff is committed to enhancing the education on this growing field, and they do so through lectures, "hands-on" courses, writing of clinical practice guidelines, and with their daily training of pulmonary fellows.

Diagnostic Bronchoscopy

  • Diagnosis of central and peripheral lung nodules or masses
  • Mediastinal staging of lung cancer
  • Early detection of centrally located lung cancer

Procedures performed

  • Autofluorescence bronchoscopy (AFB)
  • Cryo-biopsies of the lung
  • Electromagnetic navigation (EMN)
  • Endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS)
  • Radial-probe endobrochial ultrasound (RP-EBUS)

Therapeutic Bronchoscopy

  • Treatment of early-stage lung cancer
  • Treatment of central airway obstruction of benign origin (post-intubation tracheal stenosis, tracheobronchomalacia, idiopathic stenosis, etc.)
  • Treatment of central airway obstruction of malignant origin
  • Treatment of hemoptysis
  • Treatment of persistent air-leaks (broncho-pleural fistulas)
  • Endoscopic lung volume reduction (clinical trials)
  • Placement of fiducial markers for stereotactic body radiation therapy (“cyberknife”)
  • Bronchoscopic treatment of difficult to control asthma

Procedures performed

  • Argon plasma coagulator
  • Balloon dilatation
  • Bronchial thermoplasty
  • Cryotherapy
  • Endobronchial valve placement
  • Laser
  • Microdebrider bronchoscopy
  • Rigid bronchoscopy
  • Stent placement

Pleural Disorders

  • Diagnosis of pleural effusions of unclear origin
  • Management of malignant and otherwise persistent pleural effusions

Procedures performed

  • Chest tube placement
  • Indwelling pleural catheters
  • Medical thoracoscopy
  • Thoracentesis
