Texas Children's Hospital is the primary teaching site for our residents in pediatric anesthesiology and one of the nation's premier tertiary pediatric facilities. All faculty members are specialty trained in pediatric anesthesiology. A number of faculty members have additional board certification in pediatrics and critical care medicine.
Anesthesia faculty and residents care for pediatric patients undergoing a vast array of procedures, including all types of elective surgery, liver transplantation, conjoined twin separation, and major neurosurgical, orthopedic and plastics operations. Remote site anesthesia activities include cardiac catheterization and sedation for a variety of interventional and radiographic techniques. Weekly conferences include departmental grand rounds, presentation of core material for residents, and morbidity and mortality conferences.
Residents complete a three month rotation in pediatric anesthesiology during the CA-2 training year. An additional month is completed as a CA-3. All CA-3 residents have the opportunity to take additional months of pediatric anesthesiology as an elective if they so desire. Residents may also be assigned a month of pediatric regional anesthesia at the West Campus of Texas Children’s Hospital, located approximately 30 minutes away from downtown.
A pediatric pain consultation service provides residents exposure to pain management in children and we also offer an elective in pediatric cardiovascular anesthesiology at the CA-3 level of training.
