Alkek Eye Center & Baylor-St. Luke’s Medical Center
The Alkek Eye Center is located in the Jamail Specialty Center at Baylor College of Medicine and serves as the main academic eye care center in the greater Houston area. The 50,000 square foot clinic includes 58 eye lanes and provides care in all ophthalmic subspecialties. The ophthalmology service sees approximately 6000 patients and performs 400 surgeries per month. The clinic includes an ambulatory surgery center with 5 dedicated eye ORs and state-of-the-art equipment, including a femtosecond laser, 3D surgical visualization system, intraoperative surgical guidance system, and intraoperative OCT. Our residents spend 20 percent of their time at the Alkek Eye Center and it accounts for approximately 10 percent of their surgical experience.
Harris Health System/Ben Taub Hospital
Ben Taub Hospital is the primary hospital for the Harris Health System, which serves the 4.8 million residents of Harris county, the largest county in Texas. Ben Taub, staffed by the faculty and residents of Baylor College of Medicine, is a level I trauma center that cares for more than 80,000 emergency patients each year. The ophthalmology service, which moved to a brand new, 15-lane eye clinic in July 2017, sees over 2000 patients and performs over 100 eye surgeries, 200 lasers, and 300 intravitreal injections per month. The clinic serves as a tertiary referral center for the community clinics of the Harris Health System and treats a highly diverse patient population with a broad range of ophthalmic pathology. Our residents spend one third of their time working at BTGH and it accounts for approximately 30 percent of their surgical experience.
Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center
The Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center serves as the primary health care provider for approximately 130,000 veterans in southwest Texas. The 118-acre MED VAMC campus is home to 357 acute care beds, as well as a 40-bed Spinal Cord Injury Center, and a 140-bed Community Living Center. The Eye Care Line is the only independent ophthalmology clinic in the entire VA system and was expanded in 2012 to over 10,000 square feet with 25 eye lanes. The Eye Care Line sees over 4000 patients and performs over 170 eye surgeries, 60 lasers, and 300 intravitreal injections per month. The Surgical Ambulatory Care Center has three outpatient ORs with state-of-the-art equipment, including a femtosecond laser for cataract surgery and 3D visualization system. Our residents spend 40 percent of their time working at the MED VAMC and it accounts for approximately 60 percent of their surgical experience.
Texas Children’s Hospital
Texas Children’s Hospital is the largest pediatric hospital in the nation with over 4.3 million patient encounters annually across their network. The 724-bed facility contains a level I pediatric trauma center and a level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The Texas Children's ophthalmology service provides clinical and surgical care at the main Texas Children's campus in the Texas Medical Center, as well as multiple ambulatory clinics in the greater Houston area. The ophthalmology service sees over 3200 patients and performs over 130 eye surgeries per month. Our residents spend approximately 10 percent of their time working at Texas Children's.
Houston Methodist Hospital
Houston Methodist Hospital is one of the premiere hospitals in the state of Texas and the southwestern United States. The hospital has over 900 beds and cares for approximately 400,000 emergency room encounters, outpatient visits, and hospital admissions per year. Baylor ophthalmology residents cover the HMH Emergency Center after hours and on weekends, and receive part of their Neuro-ophthalmology and Ophthalmic Pathology training at HMH.
