The Preliminary Medicine Intern year is a robust internal medicine training experience for residents moving on to other specialties in PGY2 year. Prelim interns are fully integrated into the internal medicine residency with access to all rotations, mentorship opportunities, and extracurricular experiences. We work with our prelim interns to allow completion of Step 3 and transition to their subspecialty programs at the end of the year.
Starting in the 2022-2023 academic year, we have restructured our intern year experience to create more balance, including for preliminary year interns. The number of weeks on inpatient general medicine has been reduced slightly to allow for increased outpatient and inpatient elective opportunities.
Sample Yearly Schedule for Preliminary Interns
- Wards: 16 weeks
- Ambulatory clinics (primary care or subspecialty): 8 weeks
- Inpatient subspecialty electives: 12 weeks
- ICU: 8 weeks
- Emergency Medicine: 4 weeks
